Wine tasting Domaine Romanée Conti
A tasting like no other
Vertical tasting of Romanée Conti Echezeaux
Last Saturday, November 9th, we had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Davos of Wine at a vertical tasting of wines from Domaine Romanée ContiThe tasting was organized by François Mauss, the president of the World Wine Symposium and the European Grand Jury, and by Aubert de Vilaine, himself, the leader of the prestigious domaine of Burgundy. The event was all the more exciting because the domaine Cavissima has entrusted us with our first allocation this year.
The wine tasting lasted approximately one hour, with 30 minutes of silent tasting followed by 30 minutes of commentary from the most knowledgeable tasters. The wines presented were Echézeaux And Romanée-Saint-Vivant across 4 vintages: 2005, 1999, 1985 and 1979.
Here's what we've learned:
- 2005 and 1999Two splendid vintages in Burgundy, very closed at this stage. Both the nose and palate suggest great potential. Romanée-Saint-Vivant They seem to me more evolved, more pleasant and more expressive than the Echézeaux.
- In general, Romanée-Saint-Vivant wines seem more feminine to me, while Echézeaux wines are more masculine. This is expressed by a warm, even very warm, and quite frank palate for the 1985 and 1979 Echézeaux, whereas the Romanée wines are more subtle, charming, fruity, and enveloping.
- The wines of 1985 have reached their maturity and deliver their full aromatic complexity: a lively and expressive nose of red and black fruits, a luscious palate with aromas of red and/or black fruits, camphor, eucalyptus, truffle… A incredible lengthI prefer the Echézeaux from these last two vintages.
- The year 1979 is just incredible And the Echézeaux surpasses all the other wines in the tasting. The wine is perfect, the tannins melting beautifully. It delivers its full potential: the emotion is intense and lingers endlessly. I had never before experienced this feeling of well-being with a wine; I close my eyes and time suddenly stops. Silence gives way to meditation for a moment. I am unable to spit out the magic potion… happiness washes over me. I open my eyes and there, incredible joy, a glass of the much-requested wine is handed to me. Montrachet du Domaine Romanée ContiThis will be yet another incredible tasting experience.
