The Echezeaux Grand Cru appellation is located above Flagey-Echezeaux in Burgundy . The vineyard covers 35.2 hectares between Vougeot and the Premier Cru vineyards of Vosne-Romanée. Pinot Noir is the only grape variety planted on these poor soils, which rest on Jurassic limestone dating back 175 million years. This appellation includes 11 climats (vineyard sites), such as Echezeaux en Dessus, En Orveaux, and Clos Saint Denis.
The Grands Échezeaux Grand Cru appellation is more exclusive and covers 8 hectares. Its vineyards extend from those of Musigny. The wines are even more powerful, elegant, and refined, yet still retain a masculine character.
The red wines of Échezeaux are true wines for aging and improve significantly after a minimum of 5 years in the cellar. Very masculine, the wines have a tight tannic structure: they are both powerful and structured.
Decanted at the right temperature, Echezeaux Grand Cru wine will perfectly complement a roasted shoulder of lamb, a fine piece of grilled beef or even a pot-au-feu.
Among the forty or so estates that share the Echezeaux appellation, Cavissima has selected several masters producing very high-quality wines.
Domaine de la Romanée Conti
Producing wines from both the Echezeaux and Grands Echezeaux appellations, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is the leading specialist in this appellation, with over 8 hectares in total. Crafted for exceptional aging , both wines possess a rare finesse. Available upon request, we suggest you contact our advisors if you wish to purchase one of these bottles.
Domaine Daniel Rion
A very small producer in the Échezeaux appellation, Domaine Daniel Rion owns 34 hectares of old vines, some 60 years old. Offering excellent value, their Échezeaux reveals aromas of raspberry and wild rose. The wine is full-bodied, powerful, and remarkably silky. It pairs perfectly with roast pigeon.
Domaine Louis Jadot
Owning vineyards in both Echézeaux and Grands Echézeaux, Maison Louis Jadot produces a wine with exceptional aging potential, sometimes lasting up to 24 months. Powerful and elegant, these wines offer aromas of red fruit and spice. The Grands Echézeaux wines also display aromas of black fruit.
Gevrey-Chambertin is a village appellation in the Côte de Nuits, straddling the commune of the same name and that of Brochon. 402 hectares of Pinot Noir are cultivated there, 80 of which are Premier Cru. The resulting red wines boast a beautiful ruby color and aromas of flowers, blackberry, and strawberry. The bouquet becomes wilder with age, developing notes of leather and undergrowth. On the palate, these are undeniably great wines, rich and powerful, full-bodied and structured with velvety tannins. They can be enjoyed young, but, as is often the case in Burgundy, they are also excellent wines for aging .
Domaine Denis Mortet
Domaine Mortet was founded in 1956 in Gevrey-Chambertin by Charles Mortet, who was joined in 1978 by his son Denis. Today, it is Arnaud, the grandson, who manages the estate. The estate is run in close harmony with nature, following principles akin to organic farming.
Originally consisting of a single hectare of vines, the Denis Mortet estate now boasts 11 vineyards across the Bourgogne, Marsannay , Fixin, Clos-de-Vougeot , Chambolle-Musigny , Chambertin , and Gevrey-Chambertin appellations. Within the latter, there is a Gevrey-Chambertin Village, a Vieilles Vignes cuvée, a single-vineyard cuvée, and three Premier Crus.
Faiveley Estate
The Faiveley family is one of the great wine families of Burgundy . In 1825, the Faiveley wine merchant business was established in Nuits-Saint-Georges , and the estate was later added to complement this activity. In 1934, to overcome the economic crisis, Georges Faiveley co-founded the renowned Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin (Brotherhood of the Knights of the Wine Tasting Cup) to promote Burgundy wines.
Today, Erwan and Eve Faiveley run the estate, with the respect for the land passed down by their ancestors.
In Gevrey-Chambertin , the Faiveley estate produces 4 single-vineyard wines and 7 Premier Crus, including one monopole, “Clos des Issarts”.
