Producer

The Château Smith Haut Lafitte vineyard stretches across well-exposed slopes, benefiting from a temperate oceanic climate. The soils, composed of clay and limestone, impart a unique minerality to the wines. The sustainable viticulture practiced here promotes biodiversity and vine health, allowing the full expression of each grape variety's character. The vines, averaging 30 years old, are carefully cultivated to guarantee the quality of the grapes, which are harvested by hand.

Owner and history

Catherine and Daniel Cathiard, passionate about wine and the art of living, took over Château Smith Haut Lafitte in 1990. Their commitment to excellence is reflected in environmentally friendly winemaking practices and meticulous attention to every stage of production. By incorporating biodynamic methods, they have revitalized the estate while preserving its history. Their vision is to produce authentic wines that reflect the terroir and identity of Pessac-Léognan, while offering a unique sensory experience to wine lovers.

Vinification and aging

Winemaking at Château Smith Haut Lafitte is a meticulous process. After a rigorous hand-harvesting, the grapes are destemmed and gently crushed. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, allowing for optimal extraction of aromas and tannins. Aging in oak barrels (30% new) lasts approximately 12 months, giving the wine its complexity and structure. Blending is carried out after tasting to ensure the harmony and balance of the final cuvée.
