    Owner and history

    This wine was born from a partnership between two of the biggest names in Bordeaux and the Napa Valley : Baron Philippe de Rothschild, of the Château Mouton Rothschild, and Robert Mondavi. Opus One was the first high-end Californian wine marketed in Europe and is among the first "Cult Cabernets", alongside estates such as Harlan Estate and Screaming Eagle. The collaborative project began in the 1970s and came to fruition in 1979 with the creation of the first vintage ofOpus One. Although its commercialization to the general public only began in 1984, the wine had already generated considerable interest: in fact, a single case had been sold for $24,000 at the first wine auction of the Napa Valley, in 1981. The brand Opus One experienced considerable growth throughout the 1990s, particularly in international markets; in 2004, following the acquisition of Robert Mondavi Winery by Constellation Brands, the multinational also became a co-owner ofOpus One.

    Vinification and aging

    In 1993, continuing the Bordeaux tradition of second wines, Opus One began producing a secondary cuvée called Overture. Although still a top-of-the-range wine, it is made from grapes that were not selected for la cuvée emblematic of domaine.
