In Alsace today, intercropping remains the most traditional method of environmentally friendly farming. Historically, intercropping reflects a biodiversity where all plants protect and influence one another. Traditionally, trees, vines, and potatoes grew alongside a wide variety of grapes. Since 1975, several decrees have mandated single-varietal wines for the production of the various Grand Cru wines of the region.
