The birth of the Domaine de l'Arlot
From the marble quarry to AXA Millésimes
Jean-Charles Vienot, a Burgundian heir, is the first owner of the estate recognized by the archives. He is placed at the end of the 18th century. His lands are located on the remains of an old marble quarry, in the commune ofPremeaux.VienotHe then decided to build walls around his property, thus giving birth to the “Clos de l'Arlot”.
The estate was then passed on to his heirs, and in 1891 it was sold to a merchant.Jules BelinThe latter will expand the property by buying up the neighboring plots, theClos des Forêts Saint-Georgesand theClos du ChapeauThis group will form the current “Domaine de l'Arlot”.
Nearly a century later, the heirsBelinwill eventually cede ownership toAXA Vintages.
Since then, several key figures have left their mark on the field. These include:
- Jean-Pierre de Smet, at the head of theArlotfor two decades,
- Jacques Devaugeto the technical directorate (recently replaced byGéraldine Godot).
Excellence through naturalness
Biodynamic Agriculture
With organic practices since 2000, theDomaine de l'Arlothas now extended thebiodynamic agricultureto all of its vines. This method consists of promoting osmosis between the vineyard and its environment by placing the vine at the center of the natural balance.
To achieve this, the winemaker abandons all chemical inputs and synthetic products and his work is carried out according to the rhythm of the lunar and solar cycles.
The winemaking process is also methodical and aims to be “spontaneous.” It is characterized by minimal and judicious intervention, with everything operating on “intuition.” Thus, fermentations start naturally, followed by gentle extractions, manual punch-downs, and limited pump-overs.
By adopting thebiodynamic farming, THEDomaine de l'ArlotThey fully embrace their "desire to reveal the truth of great terroirs." They wish to produce wines that respect the environment and express their land of origin.
It is with this long-term vision that they continue on the path to excellence.
The Wines of Arlot
Carefully crafted wines that express the terroir
As you will have understood, the philosophy ofDomaine de l'Arlotis very focused on the maximum expression of the terroir. This must be felt in the glass.
For each of its wines, both red and white, meticulous care is taken. To age under optimal conditions, the precious liquid is placed in French oak barrels. The slow maturation process then involves rigorous monitoring and extensive tastings. The cellar team thus oversees every detail.
Today theDomaine de l'Arlotproduces 9 different wines, inCôte de NuitsThere are 2 whites and 7 reds. 5 (including 1 white) arePremier Crusand they also produce aGrand Cruwhich comes from the plot very close to theRomanée Conti.
