Description

The Château de Chamirey - Mercurey 1er Cru "Clos du Roi" 2024 often represents the pinnacle of the estate's red wines. Historically considered the best terroir of the appellation (hence its name, "Clos du Roi"), this wine embodies power, depth, and aging potential.

Located on a magnificently exposed slope, Clos du Roi benefits from a very calcareous soil, stony on the surface, which forces the Pinot Noir roots to penetrate deeply. This results in a more imposing structure and a higher concentration than other crus.

Owner and history

The Premier Cru "Clos du Roi" is composed of 4 contiguous plots. The vines were planted in 1970 for the oldest ones, and 2002 for the youngest ones. Total area: 3,089 hectares. Climate & Soil: South/Southwest facing hillside, its relief has a concave shape with more calcareous extremities. The soil is dark brown in color.

Vinification and aging

With quality in mind, the grapes are harvested by hand. The harvest is then manually sorted and 100% destemmed. After the vat is filled, a pre-fermentation cold maceration of 4 to 6 days at 10°C helps extract color from the skins. Natural fermentation then begins at 24°C, rising to 31°C in its final phase. The extraction of phenolic compounds is achieved through punch-downs, the intensity and frequency of which vary depending on the quality of the grapes and therefore the vintage. Post-fermentation maceration helps soften the tannins.

The team's opinion

The 2024 "Clos du Roi" is a wine meant for aging. While Clos de la Maladière emphasizes elegance and finesse, Clos du Roi exudes strength and authority. It's the perfect bottle to celebrate a special occasion or to enhance a collector's cellar.
