The Clos des Papes vineyard covers more than 30 hectares, spread across 24 different parcels within the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. This fragmentation results in a great diversity of soils, ranging from rolled pebbles to red clay and calcareous sand. This geological richness contributes to deep and balanced wines. The vines, cultivated using organic farming methods, are on average 50 years old, allowing for the production of concentrated grapes that are a true reflection of the Rhône terroir.

    Owner and history

The Avril family has managed Clos des Papes since the beginning of the 20th century. Today, Paul-Vincent Avril continues the family legacy with exacting standards and passion. Trained in Burgundy, he has established a clear vision: prioritizing balance, finesse, and respect for the terroir. A pioneer in organic farming in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Paul-Vincent crafts age-worthy wines of rare elegance, sought after worldwide for their timeless style and consistent quality.

    Vinification and aging

Winemaking at Clos des Papes is based on a minimal-intervention philosophy. The grapes are harvested by hand, carefully sorted, and then fermented in concrete tanks without added yeasts. Aging takes place over 12 to 15 months in old oak casks, without new oak, in order to preserve the purity of the fruit.
For the 2023 vintage, the blend highlights the elegance of Grenache, the structure of Mourvèdre and the freshness of Syrah, giving birth to a deep and balanced wine.
