The Graves vineyard covers 3,500 hectares. The proximity of the Landes forest protects the vines from harsh weather, while the Garonne River helps prevent drought. As expected, the soil is gravelly, with a subsoil of pebbles, clay, and limestone. Balanced red wines are produced here from Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon, and dry white wines primarily from Sémillon.
Château de Chantegrive
This estate was founded in 1966 by Françoise and Henri Lévêque . Initially consisting of just a few plots, it now comprises 96 hectares of vines, making it one of the largest estates in the appellation. The Lévêque family practices sustainable viticulture, including cover cropping, bud thinning, and cluster thinning.
Château de Chantegrive produces two red wines, two white wines and one rosé.
The eponymous wine, Château de Chantegrive , is available in both red and white. The red is made from equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged for 12 months in oak barrels, it develops a beautiful ruby color. The bouquet is toasty and evokes dark fruit, with silky tannins. It pairs very well with red meats and aged cheeses. The white is made from Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc: the color is very pale, the nose fresh with aromas of flowers and white peach. It pairs beautifully with shellfish and oysters.
The Caroline cuvée is also made from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon grapes. It is aged for nine months in oak barrels, with regular lees stirring. The wine has a golden color with green highlights; the nose reveals aromas of citrus, apricot, and vanilla. The fruit flavors reappear on the palate, with a finish of exotic fruits. This wine pairs wonderfully with langoustines and white meats.
The Henri Lévêque cuvée is produced from the same grape varieties as the grand vin. The wine is aged for 15 months in new oak barrels without racking or filtration. It boasts a beautiful ruby color and reveals aromas of fruit, chocolate, and vanilla on the nose. The palate is full and generous, with silky tannins. This wine pairs beautifully with duck breast or a chocolate dessert.
Finally, the rosé is called La Grive Rose . It is made from Merlot and Cabernet Franc. It is a beautifully fresh, fruity, and lively wine, with aromas of red berries and white flowers. We recommend enjoying it with seafood or a summer salad.
