The wines of Pessac-Léognan have been renowned since the Middle Ages, particularly the claret in the 17th century. Today, the vineyard covers approximately 1,700 hectares, spread across ten communes around Bordeaux, including, of course, Pessac and Léognan. Red wine is the primary product. Since 1953, the Crus Classés de Graves have existed, all of which are located within this appellation.
Château Haut-Brion
Château Haut-Brion is the only château to hold both a Premier Grand Cru Classé designation since 1855 and a Cru Classé de Graves designation . The estate and its great wine have existed for five centuries and are truly part of the history of innovation and quality in winemaking.
Château Haut-Brion , the grand vin, initially offers a delicate nose and very soft tannins. With aeration, it reveals a bouquet of chocolate, coffee, and tobacco, while on the palate, the length is surprisingly pleasant. It is recommended to wait at least ten years to fully appreciate its potential. The second wine is Le Clarence de Haut-Brion . It shares the characteristics of the grand vin, but its aging potential is less. The upside: it reaches its peak in about five years, allowing it to be enjoyed sooner!
Château Haut-Brion Blanc is a dry white wine made from Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc grapes, with a very small proportion of Sauvignon Gris. The aromas are concentrated, and the palate is full and long.
Finally, La Clarté de Haut-Brion is the second white wine, produced jointly by Château Haut-Brion and Château La Mission Haut-Brion. It is a blend of white wines from both estates. It is fruity and floral, both fresh and complex, and pairs beautifully with seafood, fine fish, or shellfish.
Château Smith Haut Lafitte
Château Smith Haut-Lafitte , a Grand Cru Classé of Graves, has been owned by Florence and Daniel Cathiard since 1985. The estate owes its exceptional growth to them. The vines are cultivated biodynamically , and the harvest is done by plot. The Château produces three red wines and three white wines.
The flagship wine, Smith Haut Lafitte Rouge, is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. It is elegant, fresh, and balanced, with fantastic aging potential.
The château also produces a Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc from Sauvignon Blanc, with a little Sauvignon Gris and Sémillon. It is an opulent and aromatic wine, with lovely freshness and excellent aging potential.
Les Hauts de Smith is available in red and white. The white is made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc, balanced and crisp with a fresh finish, perfect for enjoying early on as an aperitif or with a meal. The red is made from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, elegant and complex. It should be cellared for 3 or 4 years before being fully appreciated.
Petit Haut Lafitte is also available in white and red. It is best enjoyed young, within 5 years for the red, and from its release for the white. The latter is made from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon grapes and pairs perfectly with fish or white meat. Petit Haut Lafitte Rouge has the same composition as its older sibling, Les Hauts de Smith.
Château Carbonnieux
Château Carbonnieux is one of the oldest vineyards in the Bordeaux region, and it produces 3 red wines and 3 white wines.
The flagship wine is Château Carbonnieux Rouge, a Grand Cru Classé de Graves. It is a blended wine with silky tannins and aromas of red fruit and toast. It is recommended to wait three or four years before tasting it and to drink it within ten years. This wine pairs beautifully with meat in sauce, cheese, or a chocolate dessert.
Château Carbonnieux Blanc is a dry white wine. Fresh and fruity in its youth, it develops aromas of candied fruit with age. It will reach its peak within five years and pairs beautifully with seafood, foie gras, or an exotic dish, such as a sweet and savory combination.
La Croix de Carbonnieux is available in both white and red: these are the Château's second wines. La Croix de Carbonnieux Rouge boasts a beautiful ruby color and reveals aromas of red fruit on the nose, followed by the characteristic smokiness of Pessac-Léognan on the palate. It can be enjoyed younger than its red counterpart and pairs well with the same excellent food combinations. La Croix de Carbonnieux Blanc is pale yellow, beautifully fresh, with aromas of exotic fruits or grapefruit. It pairs wonderfully with sushi and goat cheese.
Finally, Château Tour de Léognan is also available in both red and white. Made from younger vines, it is less aromatic but can be enjoyed at a younger age. Château Tour de Léognan Rouge is round and fruity. It pairs beautifully with grilled meat or even a cake. Château Tour de Léognan Blanc is crisp and fruity with citrus notes. It is a perfect match for raclette or oysters.
