History of the Estate Château Pontet-Canet

    the story of Château Pontet-Canet

    The History of Pontet-Canet Castle

    Three families from the Médoc

Jean-François de Pontet was the first owner of the Château. Having initially pursued a career at Versailles as Grand Equerry to Louis XV, he later became Governor of the Médoc. In 1705, he decided to purchase several plots of land. He then established his vineyard in the locality known as Canet. Over the years, he added a few parcels and eventually gave his name to the estate. He would then forge the spirit of theChâteau Pontet-Canetand will allow it to distinguish itself among the great wines of the Médoc. In 1855, during the famous classification, Pontet-Canet becameGrand Cru ClasséTen years later, the Cruse family became the owners of the estate. A family of wine merchants, they devoted all their energy to it for 110 years. Finally, in 1975, Guy Tesseron acquired Château Pontet-Canet. In the space of three centuries, this Château has been owned by only three families. A very rare occurrence in the Médoc.

    The evolution of Château Pontet-Canet

    A particular spirit

Since then, the vineyard ofChâteau Pontet-Canethas evolved considerably. Numerous trials are conducted there regarding cultivation methods. Initially conventional, then organic, cultivation is now carried out inbiodynamicsThe aim is to be able to rediscover pure plantings that fully express the terroir ofPontet-CanetA true return to the estate's origins and to nature. Adopting this philosophy has been a resounding success for the estate. The vineyards have never been so lush and produce fruit of unprecedented quality. These decisions have paid off handsomely, as the Château's wines continue to improve and are now among the finest in Bordeaux. Today, Alfred Tesseron, Guy's son, owns the estate. His ambition is to preserve its terroir and to pass on this beautiful heritage to future generations. They, in turn, will be able to keep the spirit of Château Pontet-Canet alive: sharing and emotion.

    In search of a balance

Authenticity of the land and precision

Following these methods, horses were also introduced to the estate. They allow the plots of land to be cultivated.Pontet-Canetwithout using a tractor. This avoids soil compaction and promotes root development. A perfect solution to current challenges. To determine the perfect ripeness of the grapes in the Pontet-Canet vineyard, tasting them is essential. This practice is part of the philosophy implemented on the estate, combining respect for the terroir with precision. The goal is to find the ideal balance to obtain perfectly ripe fruit. The harvest is then carried out manually, in small crates that ensure optimal preservation of the berries. Sorting is also done by hand and in two stages. Thanks to high-performance tools and meticulous control, only perfect berries are used to produce delicious wines.
