The history of the Pelican Estate
Discovering the Jura region
Following the death of his father Jacques d'Angerville in 2003, Guillaume d'Angerville took over the family estate, Marquis d'Angerville, in Volnay. This succession made him the sixth generation to own this 15-hectare estate located in the heart of Burgundy.
The story of Domaine du Pélican began in 2006 during a tasting at one of Guillaume d'Angerville's flagship restaurants. At his request, the sommelier offered him a wine other than a Burgundy. He suggested he try a great wine from Domaine André et Mireille Tissot, one of the iconic names of the Jura region. Initially thinking it was a mistake, he then realized the full potential of the Jura terroir. The idea then took root: to establish his own estate, outside of Burgundy. Following numerous meetings and tastings, the project came to fruition some time later in the Jura. Guillaume d'Angerville then founded Domaine du Pélican, with just 5 hectares of vines.
The terroir of Domaine du Pélican
Respect for the environment comes first.
Domaine du Pélican covers 15 hectares of contiguous vineyards. This particular plot is one of the most renowned in Arbois. The estate is managed by a team deeply committed to rigor and respect for the environment and exceptional terroirs. These values are reflected in the meticulous vineyard management, particularly through winemaking practices that respect the terroir. The estate is also managed according to biodynamic principles.
The grape varieties cultivated at Domaine Pélican are typical of the Jura region. There are 11 hectares of white grape varieties, including Savagnin and Chardonnay, and 4 hectares of red grape varieties: Pinot Noir, Trousseau, and Poulsard. The vines are grown in marl soils and on vines with varying exposures (south, west, east). The vineyards benefit from a continental climate.
The winemaking process at Domaine du Pélican
Rigour in the service of excellence
The vineyard is managed according to biodynamic principles. These principles favor manual labor, respecting the soil and the vines. Yields are also limited thanks to the selection of high-quality grape varieties. The vines are treated with natural products based on horn manure, horn silica, herbal teas, and sulfur. These treatments are also carried out according to a lunar calendar to strengthen the vines against disease.
The wines produced at Domaine du Pélican are worthy of the greatest, and are distinguished by their minerality, complexity and length on the palate.
