    Description

Domaine Jean-Michel Gérin , located in Ampuis in the heart of the Côte-Rôtie appellation, draws its identity from a six-generation family tradition and a constant pursuit of finesse. Situated on steep, south-southeast-facing terraces, it is renowned for its exceptional wines that reflect the terroir of mica schist and schist. The 2023 La Viallière cuvée embodies this signature: a prestigious red wine from a meticulously managed plot, a rare balance between power and elegance, showcasing the distinctive style of Domaine Jean-Michel Gérin in the Northern Rhône Valley .

    Notes and pairings

    Tasting notes

The 2023 La Viallière displays a deep garnet color with purplish highlights, a signature of the Côte-Rôtie appellation. On the nose, it seduces with intense aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, violet, and a subtle peppery spice, before hints of smoke and licorice emerge. On the palate, the attack is ample and fleshy, with firm yet ripe tannins supporting a generous structure without heaviness, while a mineral backbone provides tension and elegance. The finish is long and persistent, combining power and freshness.

    Food & wine pairings

Pairs perfectly with pan-fried ribeye steak, roast saddle of lamb or game in a rich sauce, accompanied by root vegetables and aromatic herbs.

The La Viallière plot covers approximately 1.75 hectares on the steep terraces (slopes of 40-60%) of the Côte-Rôtie appellation. The soil is composed of schist and mica schist, providing excellent drainage and allowing for deep root penetration. Here, Syrah expresses its full typicity: aromatic concentration, mineral tension, and tannic finesse. The vineyard is meticulously managed by hand on demanding slopes, respecting the terroir and the traditions of the appellation.

    Owner and history

Jean-Michel Gérin laid the foundations of his estate in 1983, following in the footsteps of a family line established in Ampuis for several generations. He was later joined by his sons, Michaël and Alexis, who continue the tradition of high quality. Their vision is based on expressing the terroir, meticulous vineyard management, and modernizing the facilities while respecting tradition. This commitment results in wines of great precision, assertive elegance, and proven aging potential—a major contribution to the renown of Côte-Rôtie.

    Vinification and aging

The estate practices meticulous winemaking: complete destemming, maceration for approximately four weeks, and controlled fermentation in tanks. Aging takes place for about 22 months in demi-muids (500 L), a significant proportion of which are new oak, to impart structure and refinement without excess.
For this La Viallière 2023 vintage, the lighter aging process compared to some extreme vintages helps to preserve the finesse of the fruit and the precision of the terroir, while guaranteeing a bright future.
